“Love does no harm to a neighbour; therefore,  love is the fulfilment of the law.”  Romans 13:10

Paul teaches that love does nothing harmful to another person, and therefore genuine love completes and upholds everything God’s law commands.

As we continue our 40‑day journey of fasting and prayer, we meditate on how the grace and truth that came through Jesus Christ reshapes our understanding of God’s commandments. Today, we reflect on a profound truth: Love is the fulfilment of all laws.

1. Love as the Essence of God’s Nature

Scripture makes it clear that God is love (1 John 4:8). Everything He commands flows from His nature. The laws given in the Old Testament were not arbitrary rules but divine expressions of God’s heart — a heart governed by holy love.

In Christ, grace and truth meet perfectly. Grace empowers us to live out the truth, and truth directs us into the ways of God. Without the love of God reigning in the heart, law becomes burdensome; but when love reigns, obedience becomes natural.

2. Why Love Fulfils the Law

In Romans 13, Paul lists commandments against adultery, murder, stealing, false witness, and covetousness. These are all relational laws — laws meant to protect the dignity and wellbeing of others. Then Paul concludes with a powerful summary:

All the commandments are wrapped up in one saying: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

This echoes Jesus’ own words about the greatest commandments (Matthew 22:37–40).
Where there is true love:

  • You cannot intentionally harm another.
  • You cannot steal what belongs to them.
  • You cannot betray or deceive them.
  • You cannot destroy their home, marriage, or reputation.
  • You cannot harbour hatred, jealousy, or covetousness.

Love naturally fulfils what the law requires because love seeks the good of others.

3. Love Through the Spirit, Not Human Effort

Genuine love is not something we manufacture by human effort. It is a product of the Holy Spirit working within us (Galatians 5:22). Laws can restrain outward actions, but only the Spirit can transform the heart.

During this season of Lent, God invites us not just to keep commands but to let His love fill, purify, and overflow from our hearts. As we receive grace through fasting, prayer, and the Word, love becomes our lifestyle.

4. Love as the Mark of True Discipleship

Jesus said,
“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35)

Our Christianity is not first proven by miracles, fasting, doctrine, or church attendance — but by the quality of our love:

  • How we speak to others
  • How we treat the weak
  • How we respond to offence
  • How we give, forgive, and serve
  • How we reflect the heart of Christ

Love is our greatest witness.
