2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Introduction
One of the deepest revelations of grace is this: righteousness is not earned — it is received. Under the Old Covenant, righteousness was pursued through the Law. Under grace and truth, righteousness is given through Christ.
John 1:16–17 reminds us:
“And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
The Law demanded righteousness. Grace supplies it.
Today’s passage reveals a divine exchange — the greatest transaction in history.
1. The Great Exchange
“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us…”
Jesus was sinless.
-
“Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth” (1 Peter 2:22 NKJV).
-
“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses… yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15 NKJV).
Yet God placed upon Him the weight of our sin. Not because He sinned — but because we did.
Isaiah prophesied it:
“And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6 NKJV)
At the cross, Jesus took what belonged to us.
2. What We Received in Return
“…that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Notice the language: not “become righteous by effort” — but become the righteousness of God in Him.
This is positional righteousness.
-
“For by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.” (Romans 5:19 NKJV)
-
“But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.” (Romans 4:5 NKJV)
Righteousness is credited to our account by faith.
It is a gift.
“…those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:17 NKJV)
You cannot earn a gift. You can only receive it.
3. Grace Produces Right Living
Righteousness being a gift does not promote careless living. Instead, it produces transformation.
When we understand that we stand accepted before God — not because of our performance but because of Christ’s finished work — gratitude fuels obedience.
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.” (Titus 2:11–12 NKJV)
Grace does not lower the standard. Grace empowers us to live it.
4. Living in the Confidence of Righteousness
Because righteousness is a gift:
-
We can approach God boldly.
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace…” (Hebrews 4:16 NKJV)
-
We are no longer condemned.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus…” (Romans 8:1 NKJV)
-
We live from acceptance, not for acceptance.
During this Lenten fast, the enemy may try to remind you of your past failures. But the cross declares something stronger: You are the righteousness of God in Christ.
That is grace.
That is truth.
