“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness.” – Ephesians 6:14 (NKJV)

As we journey through this Lenten season under the theme Grace and Truth (John 1:16–17), today we focus on a vital dimension of spiritual warfare — Truth as the belt of our spiritual armour.

The Apostle Paul, writing to the church in Ephesus, describes the believer’s life as a battlefield. In Ephesians 6:10–18, he outlines the full armour of God. Notably, truth is mentioned first. This is not accidental.

1. The Significance of the Belt

In Roman military attire, the belt held everything together. It secured the soldier’s tunic and supported the sword. Without the belt, the armour would be loose and ineffective.

Spiritually, truth holds everything in place. If truth is missing, righteousness becomes hypocrisy, faith becomes presumption, and salvation becomes mere religious language.

Truth stabilizes the believer.

Jesus Christ, who is the embodiment of grace and truth (John 1:14), declared:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life…” – John 14:6 (NKJV)

To wear the belt of truth is to wrap our lives around Christ Himself.

2. What Is This Truth?

The truth Paul speaks of operates on three levels:

(a) The Truth of God’s Word

“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” – John 17:17 (NKJV)

The Word of God is the objective standard. In a world filled with shifting opinions, cultural redefinitions, and moral compromise, Scripture remains our anchor.

(b) The Truth of Our Identity in Christ

“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” – John 8:32 (NKJV)

The enemy attacks believers with lies: “You are not good enough,” “God has abandoned you,” “You cannot overcome.” But truth declares we are redeemed, justified, and accepted in Christ (Romans 5:1).

(c) The Truthfulness of Character

The belt also represents integrity.

“Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts…” – Psalm 51:6 (NKJV)

God is not only concerned with doctrinal correctness but inward honesty. A believer who compromises truth in speech, conduct, or motive weakens their spiritual defence.

3. Why Truth Must Come First

Satan is described as:

“A liar and the father of it.” – John 8:44 (NKJV)

Spiritual warfare begins in the mind. The primary weapon of the enemy is deception. If he can distort truth, he can destabilize the believer.

This is why during fasting and prayer, clarity of truth becomes essential. Fasting quiets the flesh so that truth can speak louder than appetite, fear, or emotion.

Without truth:

  • Prayer becomes superstition.

  • Fasting becomes ritual.

  • Faith becomes emotionalism.

But with truth:

  • We stand firm.

  • We discern correctly.

  • We resist confidently.

4. Grace and Truth Together

Our Lenten theme reminds us:

“For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” – John 1:17 (NKJV)

Truth without grace becomes harsh and condemning.
Grace without truth becomes permissive and compromising.

In Christ, both meet perfectly. When we gird ourselves with truth, we are not merely defending doctrine; we are aligning ourselves with the character of Christ.

5. How Do We Gird Ourselves With Truth?

  1. Daily immersion in Scripture – Study and meditate (Psalm 1:2).

  2. Confession of truth over lies – Speak God’s Word boldly (2 Corinthians 10:4–5).

  3. Walk in integrity – Let your “Yes” be “Yes” (Matthew 5:37).

  4. Stay accountable within the body of Christ – Ephesians 4:25.
