Bible Passage – Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV)

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

The invitation in this verse is both profound and personal. Because of the finished work of Christ, we are not called to approach God in fear, uncertainty, or condemnation, but boldly. The word “therefore” connects us to the preceding truth that we have a great High Priest who sympathizes with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:14–15). Jesus understands our struggles. He knows our frailties. Yet He remains without sin.

Under the Old Covenant, access to God’s presence was restricted. Only the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place, and that only once a year (Leviticus 16:2, 34). But through Christ, the veil has been torn (Matthew 27:51). Now every believer has direct access to the throne — and it is not called a throne of judgment, but a throne of grace.

Grace is not merely forgiveness; it is divine enablement. It is God’s strength supplied in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). It is God’s provision when human effort fails. It is heaven’s resource for earthly needs.

Hebrews 4:16 reveals three powerful truths:

1. A Bold Approach

“Let us…come boldly.”
Boldness here does not mean arrogance; it means confident access. Ephesians 3:12 says, “In whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.” Our confidence is rooted in Christ’s righteousness, not our performance. We do not approach because we are perfect; we approach because He is faithful.

2. Mercy for Failures

“That we may obtain mercy…”
Mercy addresses our past — our sins, mistakes, and shortcomings. Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us that His mercies are new every morning. Before grace empowers us forward, mercy restores us from behind.

3. Grace for Present Needs

“And find grace to help in time of need.”
The phrase “time of need” literally means “well-timed help.” God’s grace is never late. Whether the need is spiritual, financial, emotional, ministerial, or physical, there is sufficient grace available. Philippians 4:19 assures us, “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

As we journey through this Lenten season under the theme Grace and Truth, we are reminded that grace is not abstract theology; it is practical help. In times of temptation, grace strengthens (1 Corinthians 10:13). In times of suffering, grace sustains (1 Peter 5:10). In times of assignment, grace empowers (1 Corinthians 15:10).

Beloved, the throne is open. The invitation stands. No need is too small; no burden is too heavy. The enemy may magnify your lack, but heaven magnifies grace.

Today, do not struggle in silence. Do not rely solely on human wisdom. Come boldly. Ask specifically. Trust completely.
