Text: 1 Peter 5:8–10 (NKJV)

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.

As we journey through this Lenten season under the theme “Grace and Truth” (John 1:16–17), today we encounter a powerful revelation of God’s character — He is the God of all grace.

Peter writes to believers who were experiencing trials, persecution, and spiritual warfare. He begins with a sober warning: the enemy is real. The devil prowls like a roaring lion (v.8). Lent reminds us that spiritual vigilance is necessary. Fasting and prayer are not religious routines; they are spiritual disciplines that sharpen discernment and strengthen resistance.

Yet the focus of this passage is not the enemy — it is God.

Verse 10 declares one of the richest descriptions of God in Scripture: “the God of all grace.”

This means:

  • He is the source of saving grace (Ephesians 2:8).

  • He supplies sustaining grace in trials (2 Corinthians 12:9).

  • He provides serving grace for ministry (1 Corinthians 15:10).

  • He gives strengthening grace in suffering (2 Timothy 2:1).

There is no situation beyond His grace. No weakness that His grace cannot cover. No trial that His grace cannot sustain.

Peter acknowledges that suffering may come — “after you have suffered a while.” Grace does not always remove the trial immediately. Instead, grace works within the trial to accomplish divine purposes.

Notice the fourfold promise of what the God of all grace will do:

  1. Perfect you – He will mature and complete you (James 1:2–4).

  2. Establish you – He will make you firm and grounded (Colossians 2:6–7).

  3. Strengthen you – He will empower you inwardly (Ephesians 3:16).

  4. Settle you – He will give you stability and peace (Psalm 16:8).

Grace is not passive; it is transformative.

In this season of fasting, you may feel spiritual opposition, personal weakness, or emotional strain. But take heart: the same God who calls you to His eternal glory in Christ will not abandon you in temporary hardship. Grace brought you into salvation, and grace will carry you through sanctification.

Grace and truth meet here beautifully. The truth is that there is an adversary and there may be suffering. The grace is that God is actively working in and through it for your eternal glory.
