Luke 18:14 (NKJV)
“I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Galatians 2:21 (NKJV)
“I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”

Exposition

The call to live by grace rather than legalism is central to the Christian faith. Grace is the unmerited favor of God, freely given to humanity through Jesus Christ, while legalism is the attempt to earn righteousness through strict adherence to laws and works. These two approaches stand in direct opposition.

In Luke 18:9–14, Jesus presents the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee represents legalism—confident in his works, religious performance, and moral superiority. He trusted in himself rather than in God. The tax collector, however, exemplifies grace—he came in humility, aware of his unworthiness, and cried out for mercy. Jesus made it clear that it was the humble man, not the self-righteous one, who went home justified.

Legalism breeds pride, comparison, and condemnation. It focuses on outward compliance while neglecting the condition of the heart. It creates a false sense of security and often leads to spiritual arrogance. In contrast, grace produces humility, gratitude, and total dependence on God.

Paul reinforces this truth in Galatians 2:21, making a profound theological assertion: if righteousness could be achieved through the law, then Christ’s sacrifice was unnecessary. This statement exposes the futility of legalism. The law reveals sin but cannot save; it diagnoses the problem but cannot provide the cure. Grace, however, provides what the law cannot—justification, transformation, and reconciliation with God.

To live by grace means:

  • Trusting fully in the finished work of Christ, not in personal merit

  • Walking in humility, acknowledging our continual need for God

  • Extending grace to others, just as we have received grace

  • Serving God out of love, not obligation or fear

Legalism says, “I must earn God’s acceptance.”
Grace says, “I am already accepted through Christ.”

Legalism focuses on rules; grace focuses on relationship. Legalism binds; grace liberates. Legalism condemns; grace restores.

Reflection

Are you relating with God based on performance or on His grace?
Do you find yourself measuring your spirituality by works rather than by your relationship with Christ?
True Christian living is not about striving to qualify for God’s love, but about responding to the love already given.
