Matthew 18:32–33 (NKJV)
“Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?’”

Exposition

Forgiveness is one of the clearest expressions of grace in action. In Matthew 18:32–33, Jesus tells the parable of the unforgiving servant to illustrate a profound spiritual truth: we are forgiven by grace, and therefore must forgive by grace.

The servant in the parable had been forgiven an enormous, unpayable debt—a picture of how God forgives our sins freely through Christ. Yet, he refused to forgive a fellow servant who owed him a much smaller amount. This contradiction reveals a heart that has received grace but has not been transformed by it.

Under the theme Grace and Truth (John 1:16–17), we see that grace is not only something we receive from God—it is something we must extend to others. Forgiveness is not based on human merit, apology, or worthiness. If it were, none of us would qualify for God’s mercy.

Forgiving others can be difficult, especially when the hurt is deep. However, Scripture teaches that forgiveness is not optional; it is a command (Colossians 3:13). More importantly, it is a reflection of our understanding of God’s grace toward us.

When we refuse to forgive:

  • We imprison ourselves in bitterness
  • We hinder our prayers (Mark 11:25)
  • We grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30–32)

But when we forgive:

  • We walk in freedom
  • We reflect Christ’s character
  • We release healing into our hearts

Grace empowers us to forgive beyond human ability. Just as Christ forgave us on the cross—even before we repented—we are called to forgive others, not because they deserve it, but because we have received undeserved mercy.

Key Lessons

  1. We forgive because we have been forgiven
God’s grace toward us becomes the basis for our forgiveness toward others.
  2. Forgiveness is not about deserving—it is about grace
If forgiveness depended on merit, no one would receive it.
  3. Unforgiveness is spiritually dangerous
It blocks spiritual growth and damages our relationship with God.
  4. Forgiveness reflects Christlikeness
It demonstrates that we truly understand and live by grace.
