Luke 7:41–43 (NKJV)
“There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”
Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”
And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.”

Exposition

This passage reveals a profound spiritual principle: the depth of our love is directly connected to our awareness of the grace we have received.

Jesus used this parable to address Simon the Pharisee, contrasting his cold, religious attitude with the passionate love of the sinful woman who had just encountered grace (Luke 7:36–50). The woman’s extravagant expression of love—washing Jesus’ feet with her tears and anointing them—was not emotional excess; it was the natural response of a heart overwhelmed by forgiveness.

Grace does not merely pardon sin; it awakens love.

The two debtors in the parable both received forgiveness they did not deserve. However, the one who understood the magnitude of his debt responded with greater love. This illustrates that revelation of grace fuels devotion.

Under the theme Grace and Truth (John 1:16–17), we understand that grace is not passive—it produces active love:

  • Love for God in worship and surrender
  • Love for others in compassion and service

Where grace is truly received, love becomes evident. A lack of love often indicates a shallow understanding of grace.

The Apostle John reinforces this truth in 1 John 4:19: “We love Him because He first loved us.” Our love is not self-generated; it is a response to divine grace.

When we grasp how much God has forgiven us:

  • Pride gives way to humility
  • Judgment gives way to compassion
  • Indifference gives way to passion

Grace transforms our relationships. We begin to see others not through the lens of their faults, but through the lens of God’s mercy.

Key Lessons

  1. Grace is the foundation of true love
Genuine love for God and others flows from experiencing His grace.
  2. Revelation of forgiveness increases devotion
The more we understand what God has done for us, the deeper our love becomes.
  3. Love is the evidence of grace at work
Where grace is present, love will be visible.
  4. Grace reshapes how we treat others
It replaces judgment with compassion and kindness.
