Luke 15:23–24, 32 (NKJV)
“And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.”

“It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.”

These verses are drawn from the parable of the prodigal son, one of the most powerful illustrations of God’s grace and the joy it produces. The return of the lost son was not met with condemnation, but with celebration. This reflects the very heart of God—grace restores, and grace rejoices.

The father in the parable represents God, who responds to repentance not with punishment, but with acceptance, restoration, and joy. The son, who had squandered his inheritance in reckless living, expected rejection but instead received overwhelming grace.

Under the theme Grace and Truth (John 1:16–17), this passage shows us that grace does more than forgive—it restores identity, dignity, and relationship. The father’s command to celebrate was intentional: “Let us eat and be merry.” Grace demands a response of joy.

However, the reaction of the elder brother reveals a contrasting attitude. Instead of rejoicing, he became angry and resentful. This exposes a critical truth: not everyone understands or celebrates grace. A heart that is rooted in works and entitlement often struggles to rejoice in God’s mercy toward others.

Rejoicing in grace means:

  • Celebrating restoration, not dwelling on past failures
  • Embracing God’s mercy for ourselves and others
  • Aligning our hearts with heaven’s joy over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:7)

Grace shifts the atmosphere from mourning to celebration. Where grace is received and understood, joy becomes inevitable.
