Day 14: I Put on the Divine Nature

Key Scriptures:

  • Ephesians 4:24 – “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
  • Colossians 3:10 – “And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.”

When we come to Christ, we are called to a transformed life. This transformation is not just about behavior modification but about becoming partakers of God’s divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). To “put on the divine nature” means embracing a new identity in Christ, one that reflects His righteousness, holiness, and character. It is a conscious and continuous process of aligning our lives with God’s will, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

1. What Does It Mean to Put on the Divine Nature?

To put on the divine nature means to shed our old sinful ways and embrace the life of Christ. It is a spiritual renewal that affects our thoughts, attitudes, and actions.

  • A New Creation: When we accept Christ, we become new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17). Our old self, corrupted by sin, is crucified, and we now live by the Spirit.
  • Walking in Righteousness and True Holiness (Ephesians 4:24): This means our lives should be marked by godly character, not worldly desires.
  • Renewed in Knowledge (Colossians 3:10): Through the Word of God, we gain the wisdom and understanding necessary to live as Christ desires.

2. Why Do We Need to Put on the Divine Nature?

God’s original plan for humanity was for us to bear His image (Genesis 1:26-27). Sin corrupted this image, but through Christ, we are restored.

  • To Overcome Sin: Our old nature is prone to sin, but the divine nature empowers us to live in holiness (Romans 6:6).
  • To Reflect Christ’s Glory: We are called to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:16).
  • To Have Victory Over the Flesh: The flesh and the Spirit are always in conflict, but when we put on the divine nature, we walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-17).

3. How Do We Put on the Divine Nature?

  • By Renewing Our Minds (Romans 12:2): Transformation begins in the mind. We must meditate on God’s Word daily.
  • By Living in Obedience (John 14:15): Obedience to God’s commands is the evidence of our transformation.
  • By Walking in Love (1 John 4:7-8): The divine nature is expressed in love for God and others.
  • By Being Filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18): The Holy Spirit enables us to live out the divine nature.

Conclusion

Putting on the divine nature is a daily commitment. It is a call to be clothed in Christ’s righteousness and to live as a true reflection of God’s holiness. As we fast and pray, let us ask God for the grace to walk in His divine nature, manifesting His character in every area of our lives.
