Day 18 Reflection: I Am Redeemed by the Precious Blood of Jesus
Bible Text: 1 Peter 1:18-20 (NKJV)
“knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world but was manifest in these last times for you.”
Understanding Redemption
Redemption is the act of buying back or paying a price to set someone free. In the Old Testament, the concept of redemption was tied to the practice of a kinsman-redeemer, where a close relative could redeem a family member from slavery (Leviticus 25:47-49, Ruth 4:1-10). However, in the New Testament, redemption takes on a deeper spiritual meaning—it is the act of Jesus purchasing our freedom from sin and eternal death through His own blood.
1 Peter 1:18-20 reminds us that our redemption did not come through perishable things like silver or gold. Instead, it came through the precious blood of Jesus, which is of infinite value. This redemption is not temporary but eternal, setting us free from the bondage of sin and the traditions of our forefathers that led to spiritual death.
The Precious Blood of Christ
The phrase “precious blood” highlights the supreme worth of Christ’s sacrifice. Unlike the blood of animals in the Old Testament sacrifices, which only covered sin temporarily (Hebrews 10:4), Jesus’ blood completely removes sin and reconciles us to God (Hebrews 9:12-14).
Why Is Jesus’ Blood Precious?
- It Is Pure and Sinless – Jesus was the lamb without blemish and without spot (1 Peter 1:19). He was sinless (2 Corinthians 5:21), making Him the only acceptable sacrifice to atone for our sins.
- It Was Shed for Our Forgiveness – Through His blood, we have the forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7). Our guilt is washed away.
- It Brings Us Near to God – Sin separates us from God, but through the blood of Jesus, we are brought near to Him (Ephesians 2:13).
- It Overcomes the Power of Satan – Revelation 12:11 declares that believers overcome Satan by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. The blood of Jesus gives us victory over sin and the devil.
The Eternal Plan of Redemption
1 Peter 1:20 states that Christ was foreordained before the foundation of the world. This means that God’s plan for our redemption was not an afterthought. Before Adam and Eve sinned, God had already planned that Jesus would come as the sacrificial Lamb.
This shows us:
- God’s great love – He planned our salvation from the very beginning (John 3:16).
- The certainty of our redemption – It was not accidental but a divine plan fulfilled at the right time (Galatians 4:4-5).
- The security of our salvation – Since our redemption was planned before creation, it is secure and unchangeable in Christ (John 10:28-29).
Living as the Redeemed
Since we have been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus, how should we live?
- Live in Holiness – 1 Peter 1:15-16 calls us to be holy as God is holy. Since we are redeemed, we should no longer live in sin.
- Glorify God in Your Body and Spirit – 1 Corinthians 6:20 reminds us that since we were bought at a price, we should glorify God in our lives.
- Reject Worldly Influences – We are no longer bound by the traditions of our ancestors that lead to sin (1 Peter 1:18). Our new identity is in Christ.
- Walk in Boldness and Victory – We are no longer slaves to fear or condemnation (Romans 8:1). We can boldly approach God’s throne (Hebrews 4:16).
Conclusion
As believers, our identity is rooted in the redemption we have received through the precious blood of Jesus. This is not a temporary redemption but an eternal deliverance from sin, condemnation, and the power of darkness. Let us live daily in the light of this truth, glorifying God with our lives and walking in the victory Christ has purchased for us.
