Day 36 Reflection: Sin Shall Have No Dominion Over Me
Text: Romans 6:14, 22
“For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” — Romans 6:14
“But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.” — Romans 6:22
One of the most liberating truths of the Gospel is this: sin has lost its power over the life of a believer. Through the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are no longer slaves to sin. Day 36 of this journey is a strong declaration of identity, authority, and transformation — “Sin shall have no dominion over me!”
Understanding the Dominion of Sin
In the Old Testament, sin was a cruel master. From Adam’s fall (Genesis 3) to Israel’s repeated disobedience, sin ruled with guilt, shame, fear, and separation from God. Paul uses the language of slavery in Romans 6 to explain that before Christ, humanity was bound to sin — compelled to obey its lusts and dictates (Romans 6:17).
But now, in Christ, a transformation has occurred — not just in status, but in nature.
What Does “Sin Shall Not Have Dominion” Mean?
- Sin no longer reigns over the believer (Romans 6:12).
We are not under its rule or control. It may tempt, but it cannot command. - We are not under the law, but under grace (Romans 6:14).
The Law exposed sin but gave no power to overcome it (Romans 7:7-13). Grace, however, empowers us to say no to ungodliness (Titus 2:11-12). - We are united with Christ in His death and resurrection (Romans 6:4-6).
Our old man — the nature prone to sin — was crucified. Now we live resurrected lives, walking in newness. - We have been set free (Romans 6:22).
We are no longer slaves to sin, but servants of righteousness. Freedom from sin doesn’t mean the absence of temptation, but the presence of power to overcome it.
Biblical Examples of Dominion Over Sin
- Joseph in Potiphar’s house (Genesis 39:7-12): A man under grace, choosing purity over pleasure.
- Daniel in Babylon (Daniel 1:8): He purposed in his heart not to defile himself.
- Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11): The perfect example of overcoming sin through the Word and the Spirit.
Living a Life Where Sin Has No Dominion
- Renew Your Mind
- Romans 12:2 – Transformation begins with renewing your thinking. Meditate on what God says about your new identity.
- Walk in the Spirit
- Galatians 5:16 – “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
- Put on the Whole Armour of God
- Ephesians 6:11 – Victory is possible when we daily dress in spiritual armour.
- Abide in Christ
- John 15:5 – We bear fruit and overcome sin when we stay connected to Jesus.
- Confess and Forsake
- 1 John 1:9 – If we fall, we are not condemned, but we must repent and rise again.
Declarations for Day 36
Make these bold confessions in faith:
- I am no longer a slave to sin — I am a child of God!
- The power of sin is broken in my life.
- My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit; I walk in purity.
- By grace, I overcome every temptation.
- I walk in victory, not in guilt or condemnation.
- I produce the fruits of holiness, and I am on the path to everlasting life.
Conclusion
The transformed life is a victorious life. Not because of human strength, but because of the work of Christ and the power of grace. As we journey toward the end of this 40-day fast, let Romans 6:14 be your daily reminder: Sin shall not have dominion over me!
