Day 3 Reflection: Thanks Be to God for His Indescribable Gift
Bible Text: 2 Corinthians 9:15 – “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!”
In this passage, the Apostle Paul bursts into a spontaneous expression of gratitude to God. The word “indescribable” (Greek: anekdiēgētos) signifies something so wonderful and beyond human ability to fully explain. What is this gift that Paul is referring to? It is none other than Jesus Christ and the salvation He brings.
This verse concludes Paul’s teaching on generosity in 2 Corinthians 9, where he encourages the believers to give cheerfully, just as God has given to us. However, in verse 15, Paul lifts the focus from material giving to the greatest gift of all, God’s grace through Christ.
1. The Nature of God’s Indescribable Gift
a. The Gift of Jesus Christ (John 3:16)
- The greatest demonstration of God’s love is in the giving of His Son:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” - Jesus is the embodiment of God’s love, grace, and salvation.
b. The Gift of Salvation by Grace (Ephesians 2:8-9)
- “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
- Salvation is not something we can earn; it is freely given by God.
c. The Gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38)
- After Christ’s ascension, God gave us the Holy Spirit to dwell in us:
“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - The Holy Spirit is a guide, comforter, and source of divine power in our lives.
2. Why Is This Gift Indescribable?
a. It Is Too Great to Be Measured (Romans 11:33)
- Paul exclaims, “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!”
- The gift of Christ is beyond human comprehension, no words can fully capture its greatness.
b. It Is Given Freely to All (Romans 6:23)
- “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
- Unlike human gifts, God’s gift is available to everyone, regardless of status, background, or past sins.
c. It Brings Eternal Life (1 John 5:11-12)
- “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
- All other gifts fade away, but this gift is eternal.
3. Our Response to God’s Indescribable Gift
Since God has given us the greatest gift, how should we respond?
a. A Heart of Thanksgiving (Psalm 103:1-2)
- “Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”
- We should always live in gratitude for what God has done.
b. A Life of Worship and Dedication (Romans 12:1)
- “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”
- A transformed life is a life of surrender to God in gratitude.
c. Generosity Towards Others (2 Corinthians 9:6-7)
- Just as God has given freely, we should also give:
“He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” - True gratitude leads to a generous and transformed life.
Conclusion
As we reflect on 2 Corinthians 9:15, let us never take for granted God’s indescribable gift, Jesus Christ. It is a gift too great to fully express in words, yet it transforms our lives eternally. Our response should be continuous thanksgiving, worship, and generosity, demonstrating the transformed life that God has called us to live.
Let today be a day of deep gratitude as we meditate on the priceless gift of Christ!
